Active Shooter Incident Reported at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, Suspect Deceased

Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia – An emergency alert was issued on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Authorities have since confirmed the original suspect is believed to have been located deceased, though the investigation continues.

As of 1:20 p.m. local time, the Tumbler Ridge RCMP were actively on the scene of the incident. In an initial statement, the RCMP urged residents of Tumbler Ridge to remain indoors, shelter in place, and secure their homes and businesses.

“People in Tumbler Ridge should stay inside and shelter in place, lock their doors and refrain from leaving their home or businesses,” a spokesperson for the RCMP stated.

The initial description of the suspect was a female with brown hair wearing a dress. However, police later released an updated statement indicating the original suspect had been found deceased. Authorities are now working to determine if a second suspect was involved and to ascertain the total number of victims.

School District 59 confirmed a lockdown and secure-and-hold protocol was initiated at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Tumbler Ridge Elementary schools. At this time, there is no information available regarding the number of individuals injured or requiring assistance.

“BC Emergency Health Services can confirm that we are responding to an ongoing incident in Tumbler Ridge,” said Brian Twaites, Paramedic Public Information Officer for BCEHS. “We are working collaboratively with our colleagues in Northern Health and the RCMP. We will provide additional details when we are able to.”

STARS Air Ambulance, based in Alberta, dispatched a crew from Grande Prairie to provide support in Tumbler Ridge. The District of Tumbler Ridge acknowledged the “deeply distressing incident” in a public statement, expressing support for those affected and gratitude for the swift response of emergency services.

“Our hearts are with all those affected, and we recognize that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared, and overwhelmed,” the district’s statement read. “Please check in on one another, lean on available supports, and know that Tumbler Ridge is a strong and caring community. We will get through this together.”

Local MLA Larry Neufeld, representing Peace River South, stated he was returning to the riding immediately after being contacted by the Solicitor General to ensure all necessary provincial resources were available.

Tumbler Ridge is situated in northeastern British Columbia, south of Chetwynd. According to provincial government data, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves approximately 175 students in grades 7 through 12.
