Tunisian President pardons a number of convicts

The Tunisian Presidency announced that “President Kais Saied issued an order granting a special presidential pardon, which stipulates dropping the punishment for a number of convicts who committed crimes related to publishing posts on social media pages.”

According to a statement by the Tunisian presidency, “The pardon, which came in accordance with the provisions of Article 99 of the Constitution, only excluded those who were sentenced not on the basis of the posts that were published, but on the basis of other crimes for which prosecutions were initiated against the perpetrators, either by the public prosecution or on the basis of lawsuits filed by litigants related to other acts criminalized by law.”

The new decisions come a few months before the presidential elections. The President of the Republic “issued a number of orders yesterday to drop or reduce the punishment of 1,727 convicts, which led to the release of 233 of them.”
