Third place in the first round of the Turkish presidential election on May 14, Sinan Ogan on Monday in Ankara, he called on his supporters to vote in the second round of the presidential election on May 28 Recep Tayyip Erdogan to support the incumbent head of state, MTI reports.

At his early evening press conference, Ogan said:

I declare that in the second round of the elections I will support the candidate of the People’s Alliance (party alliance), the honorable Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan won the first round of the May 14 presidential election with 49.52 percent of the vote, but in the absence of an absolute majority, a second round will be held on May 28 with the participation of the two best-placed candidates. The main opposition candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who was launched by the six-party alliance Nemzet Szövetze, won 44.88 percent of the votes. An anti-immigrant coalition stood behind Ogan, who received 5.17 percent.

At his press conference on Monday, Ogan justified his decision with the stability of the country. He underlined: An important basis for stability in Turkey’s executive presidential system is that the parliament and the presidency are under the control of the same alliance.

On May 14, in the one-round parliamentary election held in parallel with the presidential election, the People’s Alliance won the government party alliance. The achieved 49.47 percent brought the ruling party led by Erdogan, the Islamist-conservative Justice and Development Party (AKP), to 268 seats in the 600-member legislature. The opposition party alliance called Nemzet Szövezége collected 35.02 percent of the votes, which gave the largest opposition party, the Kemalist Republic People’s Party (CHP), 169 parliamentary seats.

Ogan also rejected claims that haggling over political positions influenced his decision.
