Türkiye’s Cultural Heritage Flourishes with Addition of “Antep Işi” Embroidery to UNESCO List
Türkiye’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural traditions has been recognized with the addition of “Antep Işi” embroidery to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists, bringing the nation’s total to 32. The inscription was approved during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in New Delhi on Thursday.
The decision, as reported by the Foreign Ministry, underscores Türkiye’s ongoing success in both safeguarding and actively promoting its diverse cultural heritage. This latest addition solidifies Türkiye’s position as a global leader in cultural preservation.
A Legacy of Tradition and Skill
Antep Işi embroidery, originating from the Gaziantep region of Türkiye, is a highly skilled and intricate art form. The UNESCO evaluation report specifically commended the comprehensive and well-prepared nomination file, congratulating Türkiye for its dedication to safeguarding this living heritage. This recognition highlights not only the artistic merit of the embroidery but also the meticulous efforts undertaken to document and protect it for future generations.
Second Highest Globally in UNESCO Recognition
Türkiye currently ranks as the country with the second-highest number of elements registered on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage lists. This achievement reflects the nation’s diverse cultural legacy and its longstanding commitment to heritage preservation efforts. A significant portion of these recognitions – 14 out of the 32 – are the result of multinational nominations, demonstrating Türkiye’s dedication to international cooperation in preserving shared cultural heritage.
“This decision highlights Türkiye’s continued success in safeguarding and promoting its cultural traditions,” a senior official stated.
Collaborative Efforts Drive Success
The success of Türkiye’s cultural preservation initiatives is rooted in strong collaboration. Active partnerships between living heritage practitioners, local governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders have been instrumental in maintaining the nation’s prominent position on the UNESCO lists. Since ratifying the 2003 UNESCO convention, Türkiye has consistently worked to enhance its international visibility by championing peace, intercultural dialogue, and respect for cultural diversity.
This commitment extends beyond national borders, fostering a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility for the preservation of global cultural treasures.
