Twelve areas of mainland Portugal will be under yellow warning over the weekend due to the forecast of periods of heavy and continuous rain, the Institute of Portugal and the Atmosphere (IPMA) reported this Friday.

The warning in the Porto and Vila Real areas will be in place between 9pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday and Viana do Castelo and Braga areas between 6pm Saturday and 12pm Sunday.

The areas of Bragança, Viseu, Aveiro, Coimbra, will be under warning between 9:00am and 3:00pm on Sunday and Guarda, Santarém, Leiria and Castelo Branco between 12:00pm and 6:00pm on Sunday.

The islands of the Eastern (Santa Maria and São Miguel), Western (Flores and Corvo) and Central (Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa and Faial) groups are also under yellow warning due to rain and thunderstorms.

Also under yellow warning, but due to the hot weather, the south coast of Madeira, until 6pm this Friday.

IPMA issues the yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

The IPMA predicts generally cloudy skies on the continent for this Friday, with the possibility of light precipitation until the end of the morning, generally weak wind, morning mist or fog and a slight drop in the minimum temperature.

The minimum temperatures will be between 14 degrees Celsius (in Guarda) and 21 (in Lisbon) and maximum temperatures between 19 (in Porto, Viana do Castelo and Bragança) and 28 degrees (in Évora, Beja and Faro).

For the Madeira archipelago, this Friday’s forecast points to generally slightly cloudy skies and light to moderate winds.

In Funchal, the temperature varies between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius and in Porto Santo between 22 and 27 degrees.
