According to the US Geological Survey, the first earthquake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, occurred 23 kilometers north of Awash, at a depth of 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface.
About 10 minutes later, another earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred near the city of Mtahara, at a similar depth of 10 kilometers.

In the last two weeks, Ethiopia has seen several earthquakes, the number of which exceeded 120, so that 2024 will reach the highest number of earthquakes in recent years.
The earthquakes in Ethiopia raised Egyptian fears that the Renaissance Dam would be damaged, but Dr. Abbas Sharaqi, a professor of geology and water resources at Cairo University, confirmed that the current earthquakes in Ethiopia are of this strength and all between 500 and 600 km. The Renaissance Dam will not affect it, unless they exceed 6.5 degrees.
