“Tyler Goodson, Subject of ‘S-Town’ Podcast, Killed by Police in Alabama Standoff”
Tyler Goodson, whose life was featured in the hit podcast “S-Town” that chronicled events in a rural Alabama community, was shot and killed by police during a weekend standoff in Woodstock, Alabama.

The 32-year-old was shot and killed by officers after barricading himself inside a home and brandishing a gun at officers early Sunday, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The agency’s statement said the standoff ensued after the Woodstock Police Department responded to a call for service.

Goodson was shot by officers during the confrontation and was subsequently pronounced dead. The state agency is reviewing the shooting and will turn its findings over to the Bibb County district attorney.

Goodson took to Facebook at 1:39 a.m. Sunday to post his final message before his death, saying “Police bout to shoot me down in my own yard,” according to reports.

The “S-Town” podcast, which won a Peabody Award, told the story of an Alabama man named John B. McLemore, who died by suicide before the show came out. Goodson, who was featured in the podcast, had a close relationship with McLemore, describing him as “just about the only daddy I’ve got.”

Woodstock Mayor Jeff Dodson said in a statement that Goodson was well known and loved by himself, his family, and the community. Goodson, a father of five children, was also involved in a legal dispute over burglary and theft charges after McLemore’s death.

Julie Synder, the executive producer of “S-Town,” declined to comment when reached by email.

“It’s a sad story, especially if you’re part of it,” Goodson previously said in 2017 about the attention brought on by the podcast and the impact on him and the town of Woodstock.

The death of Goodson has garnered attention and sparked discussions around the circumstances of the shooting and the impact of the “S-Town” podcast on the lives of those involved.
