In a recent study, the degree of age of people with type 2 diabetes promotes the appearance of cardiovascular diseases has been investigated.

The research has been led by Amanda Jiménez and Emilio Ortega, from the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, from ) in Barcelona, and the Center for Biomedical Research Network for the Physiology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBEROBN), in Spain; as well as Bogdan Vlacho and Josep Franch-Nadal, from the University Institute for Research in Primary Care (IDIAP Jordi Gol) and the Biomedical Research Center for Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM), in Spain .

The main conclusion of the study is that, among people with type 2 diabetes, the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases doubles every decade they age. The authors of the study recommend taking sex and age into account when deciding for each patient with this metabolic disease the best way to deal with circulatory conditions.

For the study, data from 247,751 patients with type 2 diabetes followed for seven years were analyzed.

23.4% of these individuals suffered a first heart attack during this period. Research also indicates that women with type 2 diabetes suffer more cerebrovascular conditions such as stroke.

Previous studies have shown that women have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease than men, but, on the other hand, the possibility of developing heart failure is higher. More recent studies of people with type 2 diabetes also show higher rates of heart failure among women.

According to this study, blood diseases, mainly coronary diseases, cause many premature cardiovascular crises at all ages, while heart failure is more common in the elderly of both sexes and doubles every decade, consistent with previous studies.

The IDIBAPS and IDIAPJGol study also found that hypertension, obesity and socioeconomic status had a greater impact on the development of cardiovascular diseases in women with type 2 diabetes than in men, especially among young patients. .

Based on these results, the study authors recommend an individualized assessment of cardiovascular risk and prevention strategies in people with type 2 diabetes, taking into account specific risks by sex and age.

The IDIBAPS researcher, Amanda Jiménez, and the IDIAPJGol researcher, Bogdan Vlacho, show that “preventive measures should be evaluated and adjusted to better address sex and age differences, since current strategies focus mainly on grown men.”

The study is titled “Sex and age modify the presentation of cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes: a large population-based cohort study.” And it has been published in the academic journal Frontiers in Endocrinology. (Source: Clínic Hospital / IDIBAPS)
