Daniel Joseph Kinahan was arrested in Dubai on 17 April, ending a six-year manhunt for the alleged leader of one of Europe’s most violent drug trafficking organisations.
The 48-year-old Irish fugitive was taken into custody under a warrant issued by Irish courts for alleged serious organised crime offences, including drug trafficking, money laundering and his role in a gangland feud that has left 18 people dead since 2015. Dubai police confirmed the arrest but did not name Kinahan publicly, stating only that they had detained an Irish fugitive for his alleged involvement in an organised criminal group involved in international crimes in his home country.
The arrest followed an intensive investigation by Ireland’s Garda Síochána, which submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions that led to the High Court issuing the warrant. The warrant was then transmitted to UAE authorities under the bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the Emirates. Gardaí said the arrest was made in accordance with that agreement and remains a matter for Emirati authorities at this time.
Kinahan is one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group who fled to the UAE from Spain’s Costa del Sol after the murder of his close associate David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in February 2016. Byrne was shot dead by the rival Hutch gang in what gardaí believe was an assassination attempt targeting Kinahan, who survived only given that he turned left as the gunmen turned right. That killing intensified a feud between the two gangs that has since claimed 18 lives.
The Kinahan cartel is considered a major player in the European drug trade, with Europol and Irish authorities linking it to a “super cartel” that controls roughly a third of Europe’s cocaine supply. Beyond narcotics, the group is suspected of laundering hundreds of millions of euros through complex financial networks. In 2022, Spanish police raided 11 locations across Spain and England, arresting four people tied to what investigators described as the largest known money laundering organisation in Spain, which had allegedly moved more than €200 million in 18 months.
The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Kinahan and other senior figures in 2022, offering a $5 million reward for information leading to their arrest or the financial dismantling of the cartel. That reward remains active. Kinahan’s ties to the boxing world — he founded the management firm MTK Global — have long provided a veneer of legitimacy that masked his alleged criminal operations, according to investigators.
Senior Kinahan figures Thomas Bomber Kavanagh and Liam Byrne have already been convicted and jailed in the UK. Sean McGovern, described as Kinahan’s right-hand man, was the first to be extradited from the UAE and is awaiting sentence at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin for organised crime offences.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed he was aware of the arrest and said it underscores the strong operational relationship between Ireland and the UAE on extradition and law enforcement cooperation. Gardaí echoed that sentiment, calling the arrest “another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement co-operation in tackling transnational organised crime.”
The last time a figure of Kinahan’s alleged stature was apprehended in a similar international operation was in 2021, when Spanish and British authorities dismantled a major money laundering network tied to the cartel, resulting in multiple arrests across Europe.
