UAE Leads Global Push for Food Security, investing Billions in Innovation and Aid

The United Arab Emirates is solidifying its position as a global leader in the fight against food insecurity, marked by ample investments in innovative agricultural technologies and a sustained commitment to humanitarian aid. As the world faces a growing crisis – with approximately 673 million people suffering from hunger and 2.8 billion unable to afford a healthy diet, according to the food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – the UAE is stepping up its efforts to ensure a more enduring and equitable food system.
Addressing immediate Needs Through Humanitarian Assistance
The UAE’s commitment extends beyond long-term solutions to encompass immediate relief efforts. Notably, the nation has provided over 90,000 tons of aid as of last September, with a significant portion directed towards supporting communities impacted by conflict and disaster. A key example is the aid provided to Palestinians in Gaza as part of “Operation Gallant Knight 3” approximately two years ago. This assistance isn’t limited to food deliveries; the UAE has implemented sustainable initiatives on the ground,including the deployment of automatic bakeries and the provision of flour to operate dozens of field bakeries,alongside support for field kitchens and over 50 charitable hospices providing daily meals.
In june 2024, the UAE further demonstrated its dedication by allocating $25 million to the United Nations World Food Program for emergency food aid to Sudan.
UAE’s Pivotal Role at COP28 and Beyond
The UAE’s hosting of the COP28 Conference of the Parties proved pivotal in galvanizing international action. A landmark COP28 Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems was signed by 134 countries, representing the first climate action of its kind. This declaration was accompanied by the mobilization of over $2.5 billion to support food security in the face of climate change.
Empowering Local Farmers and Fostering a Sustainable Ecosystem
Domestically, the UAE is prioritizing the empowerment of its agricultural sector. The government is actively supporting farmers through various programs designed to develop farms, increase production, and improve product quality and competitiveness. The launch of the Emirates Youth Council for Agriculture in May, a joint initiative by the Ministry of Climate Change and Surroundings and the Federal Youth Foundation, underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering the next generation of agricultural leaders.
The upcoming UAE Agricultural Conference and Exhibition 2025 will see the launch of the national Agricultural Museum, a dedicated space to chronicle the evolution of agriculture in the UAE, from customary practices to cutting-edge, sustainable methods. Initiatives like “Enhancing the Sustainability of National Farms” – with a pledge for government agencies to source 50% of food-related purchases from local farms by the end of 2023, increasing to 100% by 2030 – are further stimulating local production and investment.
National Strategies and Pioneering Projects
The UAE’s enterprising National Food Security Strategy, encompassing 38 initiatives, aims to position the nation as a global leader in food security by 2051. The “Plant the Emirates” national program supports agricultural growth through initiatives like the National Agricultural Center, responsible for implementing programs to enhance local production.
The UAE is also developing the world’s largest logistics zone for trade in foodstuffs, vegetables, and fruits, alongside the establishment of a dedicated “Food, vegetables and Fruits Market” in Dubai. Pioneering investment in organic agriculture, vertical farming, and hydroponics is transforming the landscape, exemplified by projects like “Seven Sanabel” in Sharjah, “Bastanak” – the world’s largest vertical farm – “Aerofarms AgX,” and the Emirates Biological Farm in Abu Dhabi, which produces over 60 types of local organic products. The “Food Technology Valley” project aims to triple food production in Dubai, showcasing the UAE’s commitment to technological advancement in the sector.
The UAE’s multifaceted approach – combining substantial humanitarian aid with groundbreaking agricultural innovation and a commitment to sustainable practices – positions it as a critical player in addressing the global food security challenge.
