UAE Solidifies Global Space Leadership at Sydney Conference

The United Arab Emirates demonstrated its growing influence in the international space sector, concluding a successful participation in the 76th International Astronautical Congress held in Sydney, Australia, from September 29 to October 3, 2025. The conference served as a key forum for reviewing the latest advancements in space exploration and fostering global collaboration.

A Hub for International Dialogue

The UAE’s prominent role at the conference, including leadership positions in high-level meetings such as the annual “Artemis” agreements gathering and a summit of space agency leaders, underscores its commitment to shaping the future of space exploration. According to a senior official, this leadership reflects the nation’s “pioneering role in leading international dialogue and enhancing cooperation on peaceful and sustainable space.” The UAE views space as a vital engine for development, innovation, and international problem-solving.

Showcasing Innovation and Research

The UAE’s presence at the conference was marked by a strong showing in scientific research and public engagement. National authorities presented over 15 scientific papers across diverse space-related fields. The UAE’s 400-square-meter pavilion hosted more than 5,000 international delegates, experts, students, and researchers, with a delegation of 79 representatives from the national space sector.

Interactive sessions and workshops focused on key UAE missions, including the ambitious project to explore the asteroid belt. Other highlights included presentations on the “Emirates Gate” lunar station project, spatial geographical solutions, the UAE’s astronaut program, and initiatives focused on space situational awareness and the burgeoning economic space sector. Startups also had a platform to showcase their innovations.

Fostering Collaboration and Investment

The UAE pavilion facilitated over 55 meetings dedicated to exploring cooperation opportunities and addressing shared challenges, bringing together more than 200 companies and representatives from various space agencies. This demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to building a robust and collaborative space ecosystem.

Engineer Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of the Emirates Space Agency, emphasized the significant engagement with senior officials and international delegations, highlighting the agency’s leading national projects. Salem Hamid Al-Marri, Director General of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center, stated that the UAE’s participation “embodies the role that space plays in uniting humanity on the path of knowledge and progress and building a future future.”

Capacity Building and National Capabilities

The conference also served as a platform to showcase the UAE’s investment in capacity building. Ali Al-Shehhi, Director of the National Center for Space Science and Technology at the Emirates University, noted that the second year of participation reflects the “continuous growth in our programs and our research and technical facilities,” as well as the center’s role in leading advanced missions and developing a skilled national workforce.

Walid Al-Sammari, head of the space and cyber technology sector at the Edge Group, affirmed the UAE’s “firm commitment to paying the innovation process, promoting international cooperation, and building sovereign national capabilities in the field of space.” Ralph Koyis, Director of Business Development at Orbit Worms, added that the UAE Space Agency has created “a distinct platform for cooperation, exchange of knowledge and opening new horizons.”
