TAMPA, Fla. – The University at Albany women’s track and field team kicked off its 2026 outdoor season at the USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa this weekend, recording four top-10 marks and a series of personal bests. While no team score was kept at the meet, the early-season competition provided a valuable opportunity for athletes to gauge their progress and set the tone for the months ahead. The performance highlighted a promising start for the Great Danes, particularly in the discus throw and middle-distance events, as they build toward championship contention in the America East Conference and beyond.

Sophomore Lalenii Grant led the way for UAlbany, delivering a standout performance in the discus throw. She improved upon her personal record with a throw of 56.81 meters (186-4), securing a third-place finish and marking the first collegiate competition of her season. That distance currently ranks her third nationally, according to results posted on Halfmile Timing. Grant’s success signals a strong season ahead for the sophomore, who is quickly establishing herself as a force in the field events.

Beyond Grant’s impressive showing, Skyler Smith demonstrated versatility and strength in the track events. The sophomore entered the program’s top 10 in both the 800m (2:11.28) and the 1500m (4:31.79), both personal records. Smith’s ability to excel in both distances underscores her potential as a key contributor to the team’s scoring efforts throughout the season. Aiva Pinches, a rookie on the team, also made her mark, achieving a personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:12.24.

The meet also saw strong performances from veteran athletes. Nattaly Lindo achieved a personal record in the shot put, throwing 13.73 meters (45-0.5) and moving into eighth place in program history. Amelia Benjamin and Miyanah Robinson both returned to competition after sitting out the indoor season due to injury, making their 2025-26 debuts in the high jump. Benjamin finished third, clearing her average height from the previous year.

Personal Records Highlight Early Season Gains

Several Great Danes capitalized on the opportunity to set latest personal bests in Tampa. Stephanie Weiner recorded a personal record in the 200m, finishing in 24.49 seconds. In addition to Smith and Pinches’ performances in the 800m, the 1500m also saw a personal best from Smith. Lindo’s shot put and hammer throw performances (50.40m/165-4) both resulted in personal records, demonstrating her continued development in the throwing events. These individual improvements suggest a team-wide commitment to progress and a positive trajectory for the season.

Returning Athletes and New Faces

The UAlbany team’s performance in Florida showcased a blend of experienced athletes and promising newcomers. The return of Benjamin and Robinson from injury provides added depth to the high jump roster, while Pinches’ strong showing in the 800m indicates the emergence of a new talent. The team’s ability to integrate these athletes seamlessly into the competition lineup will be crucial as they navigate the challenges of the outdoor season. The Great Danes also saw solid performances across the board, with Shenequa Vassell (10th in the 100m, 11.73), Adaliz Hunt (12th in the 100m, 11.75), and Beatriz Mora Herencia (5th in the javelin throw, 47.18m) all contributing to the team’s overall effort.

However, the 4x100m relay team experienced a setback, recording a “DNF” (did not finish) result. While disappointing, this early-season challenge provides an opportunity for the team to analyze their performance and refine their strategy for future competitions.

Looking Ahead to Florida and Beyond

The Great Danes will return to Florida in two weeks to compete in the Pepsi Florida Relays (April 3-4). Simultaneously, a majority of the team will remain in the Northeast for the UConn Dog Fight Meet on April 4. This split-squad approach allows UAlbany to maximize its competitive opportunities and provide valuable experience for a wider range of athletes. The early success in Tampa provides a foundation for a successful outdoor season. With a combination of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, the UAlbany women’s track and field team is poised to make a significant impact in the America East Conference and beyond. The team’s next competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays will offer a further test of their capabilities and a glimpse into their potential for the remainder of the season.
