by Grace Chen

Students at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) have demonstrated a powerful commitment to community support, recently concluding a substantial aid drive for vulnerable families in the state. The “Brigada Multidisciplinaria Mano Cadena 2026” initiative, spearheaded by the university’s Dirección de Actividades Estudiantiles, collected over 16 tons of essential supplies between March 9th and 25th. This outpouring of generosity underscores the UANL’s dedication to social responsibility and its role as a vital resource for the surrounding communities.

The collected donations – including medications, food staples, pet food, toys, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene items – are destined for the municipalities of Cadereyta Jiménez, Juárez, and China. These areas will be the focus of the “Brigada Multidisciplinaria Mano Cadena” outreach program, which will be centered at Preparatoria No. 12 on March 28th. The effort reflects a growing trend of university-led initiatives aimed at addressing local needs and fostering civic engagement. The scale of the donation highlights the willingness of students and the broader university community to contribute to the well-being of their neighbors.

A University-Wide Effort

The closing ceremony of the aid collection saw UANL Rector Santos Guzmán López and Secretary General Mario Alberto Garza Castillo actively participating, assisting students in loading the donations onto trucks bound for Cadereyta Jiménez. Rector Guzmán López emphasized the central importance of social responsibility within the university’s core values. “It is very beautiful that we can come together and work as a team, always seeking to impact and contribute our grain of sand to our community,” he stated, according to the UANL’s Vida Universitaria publication. “It is part of our social responsibility and the impact that our institution has.”

This isn’t simply about providing material goods, Guzmán López explained. It’s about cultivating a culture of service and demonstrating the university’s commitment to the communities it serves. He encouraged greater participation in future events, highlighting the positive impact such initiatives have on the university’s reputation and its ability to address local challenges. The university’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations extends beyond immediate disaster relief, encompassing ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and promote sustainable development.

Beyond Donations: Multidisciplinary Support

The “Brigada Multidisciplinaria Mano Cadena 2026” extends far beyond simply delivering supplies. More than 250 students are participating as brigadistas, working alongside faculty to provide a range of essential services. The initiative, based at Preparatoria 12 in Cadereyta Jiménez, will offer general medical consultations, nutritional guidance, dental care, and legal advice. Preparatoria No. 12 will serve as the central hub for these activities, bringing much-needed resources directly to the community.

Recognizing the importance of holistic well-being, the brigade will also host sports and recreational activities for children. Adrián Eduardo Lozano González, Director of Student Activities, emphasized that the initiative leverages the skills and knowledge of UANL students to benefit the wider community. “One of the most key university values is social responsibility,” he said. “When there are natural disasters, the UANL community is always ready to support. It’s a beautiful experience and something that characterizes us as Tigres, always supporting others.”

The multidisciplinary approach reflects a growing understanding of the complex needs of vulnerable communities. Providing access to healthcare, legal assistance, and recreational opportunities alongside essential supplies creates a more comprehensive and sustainable form of support. This model of community engagement is increasingly being adopted by universities across Mexico and Latin America, recognizing the potential for higher education institutions to play a vital role in addressing social challenges.

The donated items included:

  • Medicamentos
  • Víveres
  • Alimento para mascotas
  • Juguetes
  • Artículos de limpieza
  • Artículos de higiene personal

The services offered during the brigade include:

As the “Brigada Multidisciplinaria Mano Cadena 2026” prepares to deploy to Cadereyta Jiménez, Juárez, and China, the UANL is setting a powerful example of how universities can serve as engines of social change. The initiative demonstrates a commitment to not only addressing immediate needs but also fostering long-term community resilience. The next step for the UANL is the execution of the brigade on March 28th, and subsequent reporting on the impact of the services provided. Updates on the initiative will be available through the UANL’s official channels.
