The American transport company Uber has introduced new rules on ride prices. Based on a system of algorithms governed by Artificial Intelligence The company seeks to promote a new policy that coexists with the entry of the Digital Platform Workers’ Rights Act that establishes a minimum wage for workers in the sector.
According to the local newspaper ‘CBC News’, once the measure presented in September is approved, the routes will be cancelled it will move from being regulated by demand of each trip to be certified based on each driver’s salary, passenger pick-up location or day of the week.
Drivers affected by the arrival of the new algorithm have denounced that Uber “knows it with dynamic pricing they will only charge people “whatever you think you can pay.” “It’s based on something that is absolutely unknown to us,” said the president of the Ontario Rideshare Drivers Association.
In the United States, where the algorithm is used by several companies, certificates have expressed the opposite discrimination among company workers. With the reform, two people who carry out similar jobs, even identical journeys, will receive different wages. The price will depend on the driver.
The coexistence of the algorithm with the Canadian minimum wage law
The Government of Canada has implemented several reforms to working conditions and workers’ statutes. The law on workers’ rights of digital platforms, which is expected to come into force in 2025, establishes that workers linked to public and private transport must have a minimum wage close to $20 an hourHowever, waiting periods are excluded.
The transport company did not show any concerns and said that the input of the new algorithm will comply with regulatory standards.
