Uber Eats delivery people protest in Paris against the deletion of hundreds of accounts

by time news

Hundreds of Uber Eats deliverers demonstrated this Monday, September 12 in Paris, to protest against a “massive purge” of the accounts of deliverers in an irregular situation.

2,500 delivery people excluded from the platform under the pretext of “false accounts”

According to a spokesperson for the platform, the 2,500 account cancellations are explained by “fraudulent uses of our application”. These deliverers are indeed accused of document fraud and irregular subcontracting.

The group of autonomous delivery people on the platforms, which took the initiative for the mobilization, argues that while some of these delivery people may not be in good standing (between 50% and 75% of delivery people in Paris are undocumented), they are nevertheless « integrated people, with families » who also have rights.

A charter between the government and the delivery platforms against the “undocumented”

According to Uber Eats, this approach is part of a charter signed with the Ministry of Employment and Transport last March, by which the platforms undertake to prevent the subcontracting and document fraud of their users. The signatories undertake in particular to “develop new technological tools to facilitate the detection of fraudulent documents used by account holders” and of “check that the photograph associated with a delivery person’s account corresponds to him”. This charter was signed following the explosion in demand for couriers, who were in high demand during confinement, a period during which these workers ensured the continuity of many small businesses in the catering sector. After signing the charter, Deliveroo set up “a remote identification system by selfie”, and other platforms have also decided to “make it impossible to use multiple phones simultaneously on the same account” and of ” to block “ the accounts in the event of irregular subcontracting.
