A Florida Uber Eats driver is facing charges of child neglect after allegedly continuing his delivery route for nearly an hour while his nonverbal, autistic son wandered alone – and naked – near a busy interstate. The incident, which unfolded on october 16th in Altamonte Springs, highlights a disturbing prioritization of a delivery app’s rating system over the safety of a child.
Harrowing Rescue on Interstate 4
Around 11 p.m. on October 16th, two bystanders intervened to save a young boy who was discovered wandering near the entrance ramp to Interstate 4, close to State Road 436. According to reports, the child was wholly naked and dangerously close to oncoming traffic.
“I was running pretty fast. Anything could’ve happened in a matter of seconds because cars were zooming by,” said Jamie Cabell, one of the individuals who rushed to help. Alexandre Thomas-Brown,the second bystander, added,”It was like we were running a quarter-mile run,and I had to catch this kid. I’m not going to let him go out into traffic. I have to save him.”
Father Admits to Knowing Son Was Missing
Police identified the father as 35-year-old Jeremy Rouse. Authorities state that Rouse allegedly admitted to being aware his son was no longer in the vehicle but continued making deliveries anyway. An arrest report obtained by WKMG-TV News 6 detailed the unfolding events, revealing that an officer also observed the child running on the on-ramp while Thomas-Brown pursued him.
A woman traveling with Rouse, assisting with deliveries, reportedly fell asleep around 9:30 p.m. Upon waking, she discovered the child was missing and immediately alerted Rouse. She claimed he “appeared shocked” and initially stated he “thought the child had been sleeping while he picked up food orders.” He allegedly maintained he had “no idea” the child was gone.
Prioritizing Ratings Over Safety
Despite the woman’s distress, Rouse allegedly continued his delivery route, even passing marked patrol units. According to an affidavit cited by Law&Crime, Rouse “admitted that instead of immediately returning to search for the child, he continued his delivery route…passing several marked patrol units.” He reportedly confessed he didn’t want to negatively affect his UberEats rating.
When questioned about why he didn’t accompany the woman to reunite with the child at a nearby walgreens, Rouse allegedly stated he “feared being arrested due to the incident,” and “if he were to be arrested, he preferred
to be arrested after completing the deliveries.” Rouse was afterward arrested and charged with child neglect. the child was unharmed, thanks to the swift actions of the bystanders. The examination is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather information surrounding the incident.
