UBJ Relegated by 0.34 Points: The FFR Calculation Controversy

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

In the high-stakes world of French amateur rugby, the difference between survival and relegation is usually measured in tries, penalties, or a desperate last-minute scrum. But for Union Rugby Jonzac (UBJ), the battle to stay in Federal 1 has devolved into a matter of decimals and administrative ambiguity.

The club currently finds itself trapped in a sporting limbo, clinging to a hope that is as much about legal filings as it is about on-field performance. As the season winds down, the situation of the UBJ in Federal 1 remains precariously unresolved, leaving players, staff and supporters waiting on a ruling from the Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) that feels increasingly elusive.

At the heart of the controversy is a mathematical calculation that has left the Charentais club just a fraction of a point shy of safety. While the club recently secured a hard-fought 32-31 victory over Courbevoie, the joy of the win was tempered by a league table that refuses to budge in their favor. Despite their efforts, UBJ remains technically relegated to Federal 2, separated from the safety of tenth place by a mere 0.34 points.

The Mathematics of Relegation

The current crisis stems from a scheduling failure in early February. A return match between UBJ and Beauvais in Jonzac was never played, postponed and eventually canceled due to a congested calendar. The FFR’s scheduling framework provided only a single fallback weekend for the entire return phase, and while other teams were available, the logistics for the Beauvais meeting failed to materialize.

The Mathematics of Relegation

To resolve the missing result, the FFR employed an equalization formula to assign points. Rather than awarding a standard two points, the federation applied a weighted calculation based on field points and matches played. This “clever” arithmetic resulted in UBJ receiving 1.66 points instead of two.

UBJ Point Calculation Breakdown
Component Value/Formula Result
Field Points Ratio 35 points / 21 matches 1.666…
Projected Total 1.666… X 22 matches 36.66
Administrative Points Added to projected total + 9
Final Tally Total Points 45.66

This precision—or lack thereof in the final rounding—has created a bitter irony. UBJ currently sits at 45.66 points, while Gujan-Mestras occupies the tenth and final spot for maintenance with 46 points. Crucially, UBJ defeated Gujan-Mestras in both the first and return legs of the season. In most competitive scenarios, these head-to-head “field points” would serve as the primary tiebreaker, but the FFR’s current standings do not reflect this advantage.

The Legal Lifeline: RC Bassin d’Arcachon

With the math working against them, UBJ’s survival now hinges on the administrative fate of RC Bassin d’Arcachon. The FFR previously pronounced an administrative relegation for the Gironde-based club, sentencing them to Federal 3.

However, the process is far from closed. After an initial appeal to the Federation was rejected, RC Bassin d’Arcachon announced on April 2 that it would pursue a modern appeal through the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF). If the administrative relegation of Bassin d’Arcachon is upheld, it would vacate a spot in the higher division, potentially saving UBJ from the drop.

The uncertainty is creating a logistical nightmare for the club’s leadership. Florian Piron, the UBJ coach, has expressed deep concern over the timing of the CNOSF procedure, which is notoriously protracted. The primary worry is the upcoming FFR General Assembly in July, where the groups for the following season’s divisions are formally constituted.

I fear that we will not have the answer before the General Assembly of the FFR in July… To recruit for next season, it’s great…

For a club in the amateur tiers, the window for recruiting quality players is narrow. Without knowing which division they will compete in, UBJ is effectively unable to build a competitive squad for the next campaign, leaving them in a state of operational paralysis.

A “Blurry” Official Ranking

Adding to the frustration is the inconsistency of the FFR’s own digital reporting. The official federal website has provided conflicting signals to the clubs and the public. In a recent update, the rankings shifted unexpectedly: for the first time this season, RC Bassin d’Arcachon appeared at the extremely bottom of the table, despite having 77 points on the clock.

This momentary shift briefly placed UBJ in the tenth position—the first spot for maintenance—creating a flicker of hope that was quickly extinguished by the lack of official confirmation. The discrepancy highlights a perceived vagueness in how the FFR is communicating the standings and the pending administrative rulings.

The situation has left the Charentais club in a position where their fate is no longer in their own hands, nor is it decided by the whistle of a referee. Instead, it rests with a committee in Paris and a series of decimal points that have redefined the meaning of a sporting season.

The next definitive checkpoint will be the FFR General Assembly in July. Until then, UBJ remains in a holding pattern, waiting to see if the administrative machinery of French rugby will grant them a reprieve or confirm their descent to Federal 2.
