The incredible story of intern Ugnė was shared on their Facebook account by the Regional Department of the Emergency Medical Service (EMSS) Kaunas District.

“I am a nurse in general practice, and I get knowledge of emergency medical care from experienced workers, so I thought that this day would also be full of new experiences and practice. However, this day was not just a simple practice day for me, I will remember it for a long time to come”, – on March 23. Ugnė tells what happened.

“Besides all the work and practices, I am still a mother. The children stayed home with their father that Saturday morning. Usually in the morning, when everyone is awake, if I’m not at home, they call me.

However, I did not receive a call that morning, and when I tried to call myself, there was no answer. I started to have a bad feeling, and guided by that feeling, I switched on to look at the cameras in the backyard. And that second, I saw an ambulance and a stretcher ready in my yard. At first I didn’t even realize what I was seeing. It’s like “deja vu” – I’m sitting in a GMP car myself, and I also see a GMP car on my phone screen. I felt myself go numb from the surprise, as anxiety took over my body. The worst scenarios began to play out in my mind, and the unknown froze time.

I tried to call again, but the result is the same as before – the contact is unavailable. In practice that day I was with GMP colleagues, to whom I told about the ambulance in my yard and about the fact that I am not calling my husband. They reassured me that they would know everything soon. And indeed, he reacted quickly and empathetically to my situation, at that moment I felt gratitude for his humanity and desire to help, even though we met only half an hour ago that morning, when the practice duty started.

After clarifying the situation, it turned out that my four-year-old son Adam tried to ride a skateboard from the stairs on the second floor. The father was just walking towards the stairs when he saw his son “flying” with several somersaults.

I’m glad that dad reacted quickly, took control of the situation: he didn’t let the frightened, crying child get up and called the doctors. The emotions I felt at that moment seemed like something from a movie: uncertainty and hope that everything must be okay.

I am extremely grateful to the GMP team, who came to my home and provided professional help, calmed my son down, calmed down my husband as well, took the whole situation seriously and took my son to Kaunas clinics for a more thorough examination. Fortunately, major injuries were avoided and the son retaliated with bruises and a few major scratches.

It is paradoxical when you yourself provide help to others, and one day you or your loved ones need it. I want to thank the doctors, a big THANK YOU to emergency medical care specialist Jolanta Šereliena, driver-paramedic Saulius Lazdauskas, volunteer Martyna, who professionally provided help to my son after the injury and at the same time showed that emergency medical workers are able to provide not only physical help, but also the highest level of emotional support”, Ugnė concluded the story.
