UK Weather: Cold Health Alert Extended as Search Continues for Missing Swimmers

A yellow cold health alert remains in effect across southwest England as frigid temperatures persist following Christmas Day, while authorities continue the search for two men missing off the Devon coast. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the alert, which is valid until noon on December 27th, warning of potential impacts on vulnerable populations and increased strain on healthcare services.

Lingering Cold and Health Concerns

The ongoing cold snap is expected to have “minor impacts” on health and social care, according to the UKHSA. These include a likely increase in healthcare utilization by those most susceptible to the cold and a heightened risk to the lives of vulnerable people. The alert underscores the importance of checking on elderly neighbors and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Dangerous Conditions Prompt Swimming Warnings

The cold weather coincides with a desperate search for two men, aged in their 40s and 60s, who disappeared after getting into difficulty in the water near Budleigh Salterton on Christmas Day. Emergency services were alerted at 10:25 am following reports of individuals struggling in the sea.

Devon and Cornwall Police are urging the public to avoid swimming in the sea on Boxing Day, despite the absence of official weather warnings. “There have been weather warnings in place this week and a number of official and unofficial swims have already been cancelled,” stated Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar. “While there are no official warnings in place for tomorrow, we urge anyone with plans to go swimming in the sea on Boxing Day not to.”

Boxing Day Forecast: Sunshine and Chilly Temperatures

Despite the ongoing cold, Boxing Day is expected to bring some respite from the wind. According to Met Office meteorologist Zoe Hutin, “Boxing Day we’re going to see some good spells of sunshine, we will see a little in the way of cloud for the South and North West, some light rain, but for the vast majority it’s going to be dry.”

However, temperatures will remain low, peaking at 6-7°C, and feeling closer to 4-5°C in southern regions. “While it will still be breezy, it won’t be as windy as Christmas Day,” Hutin added. The chance of snow is considered very low.

Weekend Outlook Remains Cold

The weather pattern is expected to hold steady through Saturday and Sunday, with similar temperatures around 6-7°C and the possibility of drizzle in areas with thicker cloud cover. Hutin noted that the conditions are still suitable for winter walks for those with time off.

The persistent cold serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of winter conditions and the importance of taking precautions to protect health and safety.
