UK Heatwave Ends as Weekend Cooldown Begins

The UK’s heatwave is expected to wane this weekend, with cooler temperatures bringing relief to parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, according to the BBC. Maximum temperatures in northern Scotland could fall by up to seven degrees Celsius by Saturday, ending the heatwave for those areas. However, southern England, where the heatwave threshold has been met or exceeded for 12 consecutive days, will remain warmer than average.

Met Office chief forecaster Chris Bulmer noted that the heatwave is starting to break down, with more unsettled conditions, including showers and thunderstorms, expected by the weekend. “By the weekend, temperatures should be much closer to average for the time of year with accompanying rainfall for many through the weekend and into the start of next week,” he said. High pressure near the UK will persist into early next week, continuing the unusually dry and sunny month.

Despite the relief, the BBC reported that the UK’s prolonged heat has led to increased open water swimming, contributing to at least 11 deaths across the country. The RNLI urged swimmers to follow safety guidelines, including checking weather conditions and avoiding risky behavior in wild waters. If in doubt, don’t go out, the organization advised.

Bay Area’s Record-Breaking Heatwave to Ease

In the Bay Area, a record-breaking heatwave is set to subside as cooler air moves in, according to the Mercurynews. National Weather Service meteorologist Dial Hoang predicted “relief” starting Saturday, with temperatures dropping to the low 80s in the Santa Clara Valley and mid-to-high 70s in other regions. However, the area will still remain warmer than seasonal averages, with temperatures 5-10 degrees above normal through at least next week.

Weekend heatwave comes to an end as a cooling trend begins on Monday

The heatwave saw multiple daily records broken, including 94 degrees in Redwood City and Salinas, 92 in San Rafael, and 91 in Livermore and Oakland. The National Weather Service highlighted that 5,000-foot temperatures reached 74 degrees, breaking both March and April records. “It’s just one more way to put the sheer scale of this heat wave into context beyond just surface climates,” the agency wrote on social media.

Hoang attributed the cooldown to an upper-level low-pressure trough that shifted high pressure eastward, allowing cooler air to infiltrate. “We’ll see a marine layer of coastal stratus starting to come back into the picture,” he said, adding that the cooling effect will last through the beginning of next week.

Safety Concerns and Weather Forecasts

The prolonged heat has raised safety alarms in both the UK and the Bay Area. In the UK, the RNLI reported fatalities linked to open water swimming, with 11 deaths recorded during the heatwave. The organization emphasized the importance of preparedness, advising swimmers to “check the weather and tides,” “go with a buddy,” and acclimatise to avoid cold water shock.

In the Bay Area, the National Weather Service warned that while the cooldown will provide relief, the region will still face above-average temperatures. It’s still going to be warmer than normal, Hoang said, “but it’s not going to be what it’s been.”

As both regions brace for the transition, the focus remains on balancing relief with ongoing risks. In the Bay Area, the cooldown offers a temporary respite.
