UK Weather: Christmas Day Brings Wind Warnings, Cold Alert, and Disrupted Travel

A cold health alert and weather warnings are in effect across parts of the United Kingdom on Christmas Day, as strong winds threaten disruption and a white Christmas remains highly improbable. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow alert for the South West of England, beginning at 6 p.m. on December 25th and lasting until midday on December 27th.

The alert signals a heightened risk to the lives of vulnerable individuals and anticipates increased demand on healthcare services within that population. Simultaneously, the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for wind impacting the South West and Wales, forecasting potential disruptions due to powerful, gusty winds from 4 a.m. to midnight. Wind speeds are expected to range from 45-55 mph, peaking at 65 mph in coastal areas.

“Given the more unusual wind direction, this may lead to some disruption to transport and power supplies,” a senior official stated. The Met Office also cautioned that “large waves will be an additional hazard on some coasts.” These blustery conditions have already forced the cancellation of several planned Christmas Day and Boxing Day swimming events.

Organizers of the annual Coverack swim in Cornwall have postponed the event until New Year’s Day to prioritize participant safety. Similarly, the Start Bay Inn in Devon expressed regret in announcing the cancellation of its Boxing Day swim due to dangerous sea conditions. Temperatures elsewhere in the country are expected to reach a maximum of 7C in the North East of England and 6C in the South East.

According to a Met Office spokesperson, the prospect of a white Christmas is “highly unlikely” this year, adding, “We’ve got a very dry picture across the UK over the next few days.”

Road Travel Concerns and Closures

The shift to colder weather is also anticipated to increase the risk of vehicle breakdowns, prompting the RAC to advise drivers to ensure their vehicles are “road ready” before embarking on journeys. This includes a thorough inspection of tires – checking for damage, adequate tread, and proper inflation – as well as verifying oil and coolant levels and adjusting headlights according to vehicle load.

Travel disruption was already evident on Christmas Eve, with an estimated 4.2 million people traveling by car for the holidays. A fatal collision on the London-bound M2, between junctions 5 and 4 near the Medway services, resulted in a road closure shortly after midday. Kent Police confirmed that a 20-year-old woman from the Faversham area was pronounced dead at the scene.

Furthermore, the M27 will be completely closed in both directions from Junction 9 at Whiteley to Junction 11 at Fareham East from December 24th until 4 a.m. on January 4th. This closure will impact travel between Southampton and Portsmouth, with a signed diversion available via the A27, though delays are expected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

The combination of adverse weather and road closures underscores the importance of careful travel planning and heightened vigilance during the holiday period.
