UK Weather: Arctic Blast Brings Snow, Ice, and Health Alerts This Weekend
A dramatic shift in weather patterns is unfolding across the United Kingdom, bringing an end to weeks of gloomy conditions with a sharp influx of Arctic air. Residents should prepare for a cold and potentially disruptive weekend as snow, ice, and health alerts take effect.
After days and weeks of relentless rain for some, a change is finally here. However, this change comes with a significant chill. The weekend will begin with frosty conditions and the threat of snow and ice, particularly in northern regions of the UK.
Sunshine Before the Storm
Despite the impending cold, most areas will enjoy a period of sunshine throughout Saturday. This respite, however, will be short-lived. A senior official stated that rain, accompanied by further snow and ice, is expected to spread across the country overnight into Sunday.
Met Office Issues Yellow Warnings
The Met Office has issued further yellow warnings for ice and snow across Scotland and northern England, valid from 21:00 GMT on Saturday to 10:00 GMT on Sunday. These warnings indicate the potential for significant disruption. Rainfall is anticipated to temporarily turn to snow even at lower elevations, accumulating a few centimeters before becoming confined to higher ground, where accumulations of up to 15cm are possible.
The potential for icy conditions is also high, raising concerns about travel disruption on Sunday morning.
Health Alerts Issued for Vulnerable Populations
In response to the forecast Arctic blast, the UK’s Health Security Agency has issued yellow health alerts for colder weather across northern England and the Midlands. These alerts remain in effect until 08:00 GMT on Monday. According to the agency, the weather is likely to have “minor impacts on health and social care services, including increased use of healthcare services and a greater risk to life of vulnerable people.”
