The Ukraine crisis is getting worse and worse. US President Biden speaks publicly of a threat of world war. It doesn’t have to come to that, but war is more likely.
Washington/Moscow – The W-word has fallen. “It would mean a world war if Americans and Russians started shooting at each other,” said US President Joe Biden, referring to the tense situation in Ukraine. Shortly before, he warned: “US citizens should leave immediately.” Biden triggered a series of international warnings. Germany, Great Britain and many other countries followed his announcement and instructed their compatriots to leave Ukraine as soon as possible. Russia is currently practicing various troop movements and maneuvers – both in Belarus and in the Black Sea. Of course, that makes the situation more dangerous, says military expert Alina Frolova world. When such maneuvers take place, secret services cannot determine whether it is just training or preparation for an attack, Frolova explains. Until 2020 she was Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine and is now Deputy Head of the Center for Defense Strategies in Kyiv.
Ukraine crisis: NATO Secretary General fears “the worst”
On Thursday (February 10), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned to prepare “for the worst”. Russia would have used such maneuvers in the past as a tactic to cover up military aggression. Frolova explains that such maneuvers would make it impossible to identify the other side’s true intention. She speaks of “hybrid tactics and trickery”. “It only takes hours to change course and actually attack Ukraine.”
With her words, the former deputy defense minister of Ukraine is targeting Russia’s gestures in neighboring Belarus. Tens of thousands of soldiers – equipped with operational weapons including air defense systems and fighter jets – are currently taking part in maneuvers there. Attacking Ukraine from the north would therefore be a matter of a few days for the Kremlin.
Russia continues to arm itself: Worrying maneuvers near the Ukrainian borders
Not only in Belarus – Russia is also currently conducting maneuvers south of Ukraine in the Black Sea. Landing ships that were used during the annexation of the peninsula arrived in Crimea this week. The problem: Ukraine is particularly prepared for an invasion in the occupied east of the country. With Belarus to the north and the Black Sea to the south, three out of four cardinal points are already occupied by Russian forces. According to Frolova, Ukraine is therefore currently restructuring its soldiers.
The USA also aggressively shares such information. According to US intelligence services, it would only take two days for Putin’s soldiers to reach Kiev from Belarus. This is reported by the US television station NBC. According to David Ignatius, renowned columnist the Washington Post the TV report was no coincidence: “The US shared sensitive intelligence information about Russian movements to mobilize the allies, and when they discovered Russian intrigues, they made them public.” (already)
