Kharkiv Under Fire: Renewed Attacks and Energy Crisis Grip Region
Amidst ongoing conflict, the city of Kharkiv and surrounding areas in Ukraine are facing a surge in attacks, resulting in civilian injuries, infrastructure damage, and widespread power outages. The situation, as reported on February 4, 2024, is characterized by escalating challenges faced by residents and emergency services.
Kharkiv Faces Multiple Attacks
Overnight and into the morning of February 4, Kharkiv and its suburbs were subjected to a series of attacks. Initial reports indicated missile strikes in the Saltovsky district and surrounding areas after midnight, confirmed by both regional authorities and the city’s mayor, Igor Terekhov. Later, around 5:30 a.m. local time, a drone attack targeted the Kyiv district of the city, with a second strike following shortly after in the same area. While an initial air raid alarm was not activated,it was issued following the explosions,signaling a continued threat from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The all-clear was given at approximately 6:55 a.m.
A senior official stated that the type of drone used in the initial attack was preliminarily identified as a “Lightning” model,though details are still being investigated.
Cluster Munitions and Unexploded ordnance Pose Threat
The attacks are not limited to drone and missile strikes. On the night of February 3, the Saltovsky district was targeted with Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems utilizing cluster munitions.According to a press secretary from the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office, a missile impacted a private household, damaging a gazebo. Critically, two unexploded cassettes from the projectile were discovered near the residence.
“This creates a great threat,” the press secretary explained, “because it is necessary for explosives experts to arrive in a timely manner, fence off this place and neutralize it.” The presence of unexploded ordnance presents an immediate danger to civilians and necessitates a swift and thorough response from specialized teams.
Civilian Impact and Emergency Services Response
The attacks have resulted in a growing number of casualties and require significant emergency response efforts. On February 3, a fire broke out in a five-story residential building in the Saltovsky district after a drone strike, injuring seven civilians. Rescuers were able to save three people from the blaze, which engulfed apartments on the 3rd through 5th floors and a balcony on the 2nd floor, covering an area of 270 square meters.
Elsewhere in the region, a drone attack on a private house in the village of Kamennaya yaruga, Chuguevsky district, injured five people, including two children. Tragically, an elderly woman born in 1945 died in a fire in the Izyum district, preliminarily attributed to careless handling of fire.
A heartwarming story emerged from the village of Velikiy burluk, where rescuers successfully saved a small dog from a burning outbuilding. The State Emergency Service reported the fire was caused by a short circuit and extinguished in under two hours.
Energy Infrastructure Under Strain
The ongoing hostilities are exacerbating an already precarious energy situation in Kharkiv and the surrounding region. JSC “Kharkivoblenergo” announced the implementation of emergency shutdown schedules on February 4, aimed at stabilizing the energy system.
“Due to enemy shelling of energy infrastructure in different regions of the country,the situation is extremely difficult,” a company release stated. “Please be patient and understand the forced restrictions on power supply.” Hourly shutdown schedules remain in effect,impacting residents and businesses alike.
Public Transportation Continues Operation
Despite the challenging circumstances, the Kharkiv Metro is maintaining a weekday schedule, with trains running every ten minutes, ensuring continued mobility for residents.
