Ukraine Faces Massive Russian Aerial Assault Targeting Energy Infrastructure
A wave of over 440 Russian drones and missiles struck Ukraine on the night of February 7, with a deliberate focus on crippling the nation’s energy grid. The attacks caused widespread damage across multiple regions, prompting urgent calls for increased air defense assistance from international partners.
President Vladimir Zelensky reported that the primary objective of the assault was Ukraine’s energy network, specifically targeting generation and distribution substations. “The main goal is the energy network, generation and distribution substations,” Zelensky stated. Damage was reported in the Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Rivne regions, including damage to a high-rise building in Rivne.
The attacks extended beyond western Ukraine. In Ladyzhyn, Vinnytsia region, drones impacted the administrative building of a local agricultural college. Strikes were also confirmed in the Kyiv and Kharkov regions, though air defense systems reportedly remained active in those areas.
The scale of the attack underscores a significant escalation in Russia’s campaign to degrade Ukraine’s infrastructure during the winter months. Energy Minister Denis Shmyhal emphasized the critical nature of the targeted infrastructure, noting that the attacked substations and overhead lines – 750 kV and 330 kV – form “the basis of the Ukrainian energy network.”
The Ukrainian President has directly appealed to allies for additional air defense missiles to bolster the country’s ability to intercept incoming threats. This request highlights the urgent need for sustained support as Ukraine continues to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression. The attacks represent a clear attempt to undermine Ukrainian resilience and inflict hardship on the civilian population as the conflict enters its third year.
