Ukrainian farmers have already sown 35.7 thousand hectares of sunflower

All Ukrainian regions have already started planting in 2024 and sowed 852.1 thousand hectares of spring crops, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture reported this Friday (5). Farmers have also started sowing sunflower, sugar beet and soybeans, the agency said in a statement.

The sown area includes 118.3 thousand hectares of spring wheat, 543.2 thousand hectares of spring barley, 119 thousand hectares of peas and 62.4 thousand hectares of oats.

The ministry told Reuters this month that farmers could drastically increase the area sown to soybeans this year to 2.2 million hectares from 1.7 million hectares in 2023 because the oilseed is virtually the only profitable crop in 2023.

Farmers will also be able to reduce the corn planting area by 4.5%, to 3.8 million hectares, from the 4 million sown in 2023.

Also according to the ministry, farmers sowed 58.7 thousand hectares of sugar beet, 35.7 thousand hectares of sunflower and 1.6 thousand hectares of soybeans until April 5th.
