Ukraine Under Attack as Peace Talks Intensify wiht US & European Allies

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Russia continued its aerial assaults on Ukraine overnight, underscoring the fragility of the search for peace. The attacks came hours after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky reported having a “very constructive” discussion with negotiators representing Donald Trump, following three days of talks in Florida.

Early Sunday, the mayor of Kremenchuk, a key industrial city in central Ukraine, reported the city had been hit in a “massive” attack. As of Sunday morning, no fatalities had been confirmed, but critical infrastructure has been impacted.

Together, Russia claimed to have intercepted 77 Ukrainian drones across multiple locations. These continued aerial assaults highlight the challenges facing ongoing peace negotiations, including detailed discussions between Ukrainian adn US officials in Miami focused on crafting a mutually acceptable peace settlement.

On Saturday, Zelensky affirmed his commitment to collaborating with the United states, following a conversation with Trump’s envoy, steve Witkoff, and the former president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Zelensky stated they discussed mechanisms to ensure Russian compliance with any potential peace agreement.

Hours later, kremenchuk Mayor Vitaliy Maletsk announced his city had endured a “massive combined strike” targeting its infrastructure. The full extent of the damage remains unclear, but reports indicate disruptions to water, electricity, and heating services for some residents. Kremenchuk, strategically located roughly halfway between Kyiv and the eastern frontline, has been repeatedly targeted since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

The White House has been actively urging both Kyiv and Moscow to agree to a multi-point peace plan, but a significant breakthrough remains elusive despite engagement from both sides in the US-led process. “Ukraine is resolute to keep working in good faith with the American side to genuinely achieve peace,” Zelensky posted on X. “We covered many aspects and went thru key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new Russian full scale invasion.”

the strikes early Sunday followed a broader attack 24 hours prior, prompting condemnation from Ukraine’s European allies. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his “full solidarity” with Zelensky in a social media post, stating, “France is determined to work with all partners to secure de-escalation measures and to impose a ceasefire.” Macron, Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are scheduled to convene in London on Monday for in-person discussions.

Europe has voiced reservations regarding initial iterations of the US-led peace plan, advocating for the White House’s support for its own proposals. These include extensive security guarantees for a post-war Ukraine, potentially involving a peacekeeping force. Sir Keir has championed the formation of a “coalition of the willing”-a group of Ukrainian allies committed to sustaining Kyiv’s defense even during a ceasefire, to deter future aggression. He has described this proposal as “vital” for Ukraine’s long-term security.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected the concept of a peacekeeping force, asserting that any troops deployed to Ukraine would be considered “legitimate targets.”

On Saturday, US and Ukrainian negotiators jointly called on Russia to demonstrate a “serious commitment to long-term peace.” This statement followed discussions days after Witkoff’s return from talks with Putin in the Kremlin, which did not yield a breakthrough. Witkoff and Rustem Umerov, Zelensky’s newly appointed chief negotiator, indicated they had “agreed on the framework of security arrangements” and “discussed necessary deterrence capabilities to sustain a lasting peace.”

the situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside ongoing military action, underscoring the immense challenges in achieving a durable peace in Ukraine.
