No one is safe where Vladimir Putin’s troops are shooting. Neither fleeing civilians nor journalists.
On Sunday afternoon, the American film director and photojournalist Brent Renaud (50) was shot dead near the escape route in Irpin (eight kilometers from Kyiv).
Renaud has worked on film projects with his brother Craig in the past, including the award-winning HBO heroin documentary Dope Sick Love and the TV series Off to War.

He has reported on the refugee crisis in Central America, the political conflicts in Egypt and the fight against extremism in Africa and the Middle East, including for the American newspaper The New York Times (NYT). In Ukraine, Renaud did not work for the NYT.
► His former colleagues at the newspaper were shocked after the news of his death: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Brent Renaud. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker who worked for The New York Times for years,” the NYT said in a statement.
A second American journalist was shot in the leg right next to Renaud. He was taken to hospital and is doing well given the circumstances.
