► The Ukrainian army says it has taken over 3 km2 near Bakhmout

The Ukrainian army has retaken 3 km2 of territory near Bahmkout, in eastern Ukraine, one of the high points of the current counter-offensive by Kiev forces, announced on Monday August 14 the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of defense.

“In the Bakhmout sector, 3 km2 were liberated last week. In total, 40 km2 have already been liberated on the southern flank of the Bakhmout sector”a city captured in May by Russia, Ganna Maliar told television.

► Seven dead in a Russian bombing in southern Ukraine

Seven people were killed, including an infant and a 12-year-old child, in a Russian bombardment on Sunday in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities said.

Interior Minister Igor Klymenko initially gave a death toll of six: three adults and a 23-day-old baby in the locality of Chyroka Balka and two adults in that of Stanislav. Igor Klymenko then reported the death in hospital of a 12-year-old child who was seriously injured in the shelling of Chyroka Balka. “An entire family died in Chyroka Balka”he lamented.

Kherson is one of four regions of Ukraine which Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed for annexation in September 2022. It remains partially under Ukrainian control but is however regularly the target of Russian bombardments.

According to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, 500 children have been killed and nearly 1,100 injured since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

► France condemns Russian strikes

France condemned on Sunday “with the greatest firmness” the Russian strikes that targeted the Kherson region. “These new attacks on civilian populations once again illustrate Russia’s complete disregard for all the principles of international humanitarian law, which it flagrantly and repeatedly violates”said the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, in a press release.

“This violence does not spare children and according to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, several hundred children have been killed since Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine”she notes.

The spokesperson recalls that for Minister Catherine Colonna, “These unacceptable acts constitute war crimes and cannot go unpunished” and that France, in close coordination with its partners, (…) will continue to provide support to the Ukrainian courts and the International Criminal Court in order to fight against impunity for such crimes ».

► Russian warning shots on a cargo ship heading for a Ukrainian port

A Russian warship fired warning shots at a cargo ship heading for the port of Izmail in southern Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

“In order to force the boat to stop, warning shots were fired from light automatic weapons from a Russian warship”, the ministry said. The river port of Izmail, in the Odessa region, has become one of the main exit routes for Ukrainian agricultural products since Moscow ended the agreement on grain exports.
