KYIV, Ukraine – In a severe escalation of tensions, Ukrainian drones executed a targeted strike on a Russian tanker in the Black Sea near Crimea on Friday. This attack marked the second assault involving drones in a single day, sparking Moscow’s promise of retaliation.

Earlier on Friday, Ukraine launched a major offensive on a Russian port, fueling Moscow’s condemnation of what it perceived as a Ukrainian “terrorist attack” on a civilian vessel in the Kerch Strait. Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, strongly condemned the “barbaric actions” and vowed that the perpetrators would face punishment.

The Black Sea has increasingly become a crucial battleground as Kyiv’s naval capabilities continue to grow. Weeks ago, Moscow withdrew from a vital export agreement that allowed Ukraine to ship millions of tons of grain across the Black Sea for sale on global markets. In response to the withdrawal, Russia carried out repeated strikes on Ukrainian ports, including Odesa.

Confirming Ukraine’s responsibility for the drone strike, an official from Ukraine’s Security Service informed the Associated Press that the service orchestrated the attack on the Russian tanker. The official stated that a sea drone loaded with 992 pounds of TNT was deployed for the assault, resulting in a hole in the engine room near the waterline on the starboard side of the tanker. Fortunately, no casualties were reported among the 11 crew members.

In a separate incident, Ukraine targeted Novorossiysk, halting maritime traffic for a few hours. This marked the first time a commercial Russian port had been subjected to attack since the conflict began almost 18 months ago. Novorossiysk, situated east of Crimea, holds strategic significance due to its naval base, shipbuilding yards, and oil terminal.

Jayendu Krishna, a shipping expert, claimed that the attacks had left Russian shipping activity “largely unaffected.” He speculated that rather than pressurizing Russia to halt attacks and reinstate the grain deal, the strikes might heighten the risk of further Russian assaults on Ukrainian ports. He anticipated that Russia would retaliate, as President Putin has historically responded with counterattacks.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that it had captured a settlement in Ukraine’s Luhansk region, most of which is under Russian occupation.

Meanwhile, a summit aiming to find a peaceful settlement to the war in Ukraine commenced in Saudi Arabia. Senior officials from 40 countries, excluding Russia, convened to negotiate key principles for ending the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for providing the platform for negotiations, emphasizing the immense impact the resolution would have on food security and the lives of millions around the world.

Russian state media reported that Russia’s Deputy Chair of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, implied that Moscow would intensify its attacks on Ukrainian ports in response to Kyiv’s actions in the Black Sea.

The talks in Saudi Arabia have stirred controversy, with Maria Zakharova dismissing the notion of making decisions on the conflict without Moscow’s involvement as “absurd.” Despite this, she acknowledged that delegates had the “full scope for creativity” to discuss the issue.

As tensions continue to escalate in the Black Sea region, the international community awaits further developments.
