MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) men’s golf team concluded competition at the Memphis Intercollegiate this week, finishing 10th among 11 teams with a total score of 908 (+44). While the team faced a challenging field, the tournament provided valuable experience as they continue their spring season. The Warhawks are now looking ahead to the Mossy Oak Collegiate, hosted by Mississippi State, as they aim to build on their performance and refine their game.
The Memphis Intercollegiate, held at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee, featured a competitive lineup of teams including the host Memphis Tigers, Wright State, and Eastern Kentucky. The tournament tested the players with demanding course conditions and a strong field of individual talent. ULM’s performance, while not a top finish, offered insights into areas for improvement and highlighted the potential within the team. This event is part of a larger schedule of tournaments designed to prepare the Warhawks for the Sun Belt Conference Championship in April.
Anceaux Leads the Way for ULM
Leading the charge for ULM was junior Louis Anceaux, who secured a commendable fifth-place finish with a one-over-par score. Anceaux’s consistent play throughout the tournament was a bright spot for the Warhawks. He demonstrated a strong ability to navigate the course and capitalize on scoring opportunities, carding an impressive 10 birdies over the three rounds. Notably, Anceaux finished strong, shooting one-under par in the final 18 holes, showcasing his resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
Anceaux’s performance is particularly encouraging as he continues to develop as a key player for ULM. His ability to consistently score well and contribute to the team’s overall success is crucial for their aspirations in the Sun Belt Conference. He’s currently averaging 73.75 strokes per round this season, according to ULM’s athletic website.
Team Results and Individual Performances
Following Anceaux, sophomore Amilkar Bhana finished 28th with a total score of +8. Bhana started strong with an even-par first round, demonstrating his potential for low scoring. Though, he faced challenges in the subsequent rounds, ultimately finishing with a combined score that placed him in the middle of the pack.
Rounding out the ULM lineup, Caden Lester and Theodor Berg both tied for 57th place, each finishing with a score of +20 across the three rounds. While their scores didn’t contribute to a higher team ranking, the experience gained from competing against a strong field will be valuable as they continue to develop their skills.
Memphis Claims Victory, Wright State Follows
The host team, Memphis, dominated the tournament, claiming the team title with a two-over-par score, a 12-stroke lead over their nearest competitor. Wright State finished second at +14, and Eastern Kentucky rounded out the top three with a score of +16. The Memphis Tigers’ success was fueled by strong individual performances, particularly from Yixiang Wang and Diego Do Patrocinio Lourenco, who finished second and third respectively.
Wright State’s Timmy Hollenbeck secured the individual title with an impressive five-under-par score, highlighted by a remarkable seven-under-par first round. His performance set the tone for the tournament and demonstrated his exceptional skill and composure. The final leaderboard showcased the depth of talent within the collegiate golf landscape, with only three players finishing under par for the entire tournament.
Looking Ahead to the Mossy Oak Collegiate
The ULM Warhawks will now turn their attention to the Mossy Oak Collegiate, hosted by Mississippi State, beginning April 13 in West Point, Mississippi. This tournament presents another opportunity for the team to compete against a challenging field and further refine their game in preparation for the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Mossy Oak Collegiate will be held at the Old Waverly Golf Club, a par-72 course known for its challenging layout and pristine conditions.
The team will be focused on building upon the positive aspects of their performance at the Memphis Intercollegiate, particularly Anceaux’s strong individual showing. They will also be working to improve consistency across the entire lineup and minimize errors that can impact their overall team score. The coaching staff will likely emphasize course management and strategic decision-making as they prepare for the challenges of the Mossy Oak Collegiate.
Fans can follow the Warhawks’ progress throughout the Mossy Oak Collegiate on the ULM Athletics website, ulmwarhawks.com, for live scoring updates and tournament results. The team’s performance in Mississippi will be a key indicator of their readiness for the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Championship, where they will aim to compete for a conference title and a potential berth in the NCAA Championships.
