UMCG will conduct research into mindfulness and ‘positive fantasizing’ in depression

by time news

The UMCG will conduct research into the effect of mindfulness and positive fantasizing on negative thoughts in people who have a relapse in their depression.

People with a susceptibility to depression often suffer from negative thoughts. With the research, the university wants to find out how the thoughts of these people can be positively influenced, so that they relapse less often and less quickly.

The researchers focus on two techniques: mindfulness and fantasizing. Previous research has shown that these therapies can reduce the relapse of depression. But the scientists do not yet know how these techniques do this and which is the most suitable.

Participants wanted

The UMCG is looking for participants for the study. The researchers are looking for men and women between the ages of 18 and 60 who have had two or more episodes of depression in the past ten years. The participants are currently not allowed to take antidepressants every day.

For control purposes, the hospital is also looking for people who have never been depressed. The participants will practice mindfulness as positive fantasizing during the study. Before and while practicing these techniques, participants fill out a daily report and perform some small attention tasks. They can take these measurements from home via mobile phone.
