With 78.3 million people facing chronic hunger around the world, a new report by the UN has revealed that around 105 million metric tons of food produced globally was wasted in 2022 alone. Regarding this, UN said about food wastage. In a statement issued by the Environment Program Division on Wednesday, ‘About 105 million metric tons of food produced around the world in the year 2022 was wasted without benefit to anyone. This is 19 per cent of the total food production of the year,’ said the statement. In the previous year 2019, 93.1 crore metric tonnes of food was wasted. It is 17 percent of total food production. The details regarding this were published in the 2021 report. The number of countries that provided data this year is nearly double the number of countries that provided data to the Food Waste Index report then. The report aims to halve food waste by 2030. The study is based on data provided by households, food service companies and retailers. According to this study, it has been found that every person wastes about 79 kg of food annually. Households account for 60 percent of food waste. 28 percent of food is wasted by food service establishments and 12 percent by retail establishments. Experts say that food waste also leads to climate change. They say that food waste accounts for 8 to 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and accounts for 30 percent of global warming.
