UN resolution against Russia; Voting Gill leaves India; Russia says 498 soldiers killed

New York: The United Nations (UN) has called on Russia to withdraw from military action in Ukraine. The resolution was approved by 141 countries. Five countries opposed the resolution. Thirty-five countries, including India, abstained.

Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea opposed the resolution. Apart from India, Iran, China and Pakistan abstained. Russia, meanwhile, has confirmed that 498 of its soldiers were killed in the war. This is Russia’s first casualty since the military coup. 1597 soldiers wounded. Russia says it has killed 2,870 Ukrainian troops.

There are fears of a possible Russian offensive in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Russian troops have been stationed in strategic locations. A curfew has been imposed in Kharkiv. Curfew is from 7pm to 7am local time.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The expulsion of Indians from Ukraine was discussed between the two. Both assessed the situation in Kharkiv. Russia has promised to help evacuate Indians in Ukraine, the foreign ministry said. Russia has said it is ready to evacuate Kharkiv via Russia. Russia has also indicated that it is Ukrainian troops standing in the way.

The second round of talks between Ukraine and Russia will take place tomorrow. The talks will be held on the Poland – Belarus border. The Russian team arrived here. The Ukrainian team will arrive in the morning. Russia has said a ceasefire will also be discussed.

Kharkiv is advised to leave before 6 pm local time. The warning was to move to Pesochin, Babae, and Besludovka. The emergency order said Kharkiv should leave even if no vehicle was found. The embassy told students who could not get vehicles to travel to Pisochin to walk. Do not wait for vehicles. It is about 10 km from Kyrgyzstan. Those near the cities of Babaye and Besludovka should travel there immediately. Vehicles are less likely to be available but should be walked on. The embassy issued an urgent warning that no one should remain in Harkiv.

Russia has deployed a large army to Kiev. Kilometers of tanks have been deployed around Kiev for miles. Russia is preparing a similar tactic in another major city, Kharkiv. The shelling is also strong here.

17,000 Indians leave Ukraine

MIA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said 17,000 Indians had left Ukraine so far and all were evacuated to Kiev. In the next 24 hours, 15 flights will return to India from Ukraine’s border countries. The foreign ministry spokesman said some of them had returned.
