Doha,Qatar – The United Nations has officially assumed control of the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) as the central venue for a critical summit aimed at revitalizing the global social compact. The handover, marked by a symbolic ceremony on Sunday, signals a renewed international commitment to addressing pressing global challenges and accelerating progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Enduring Development.
The brief but significant event at the sprawling QNCC was attended by high-ranking officials from both Qatar and the United Nations. A formation of UN security officers and members of Qatar’s Lekhwiya police forces stood in formation flanking the flagpoles, underscoring the collaborative security arrangements for the high-profile gathering.
“This moment formally marks the handover of this landmark facility to the United Nations,” stated a senior UN official. “The QNCC is now transformed into a space were the global community will gather to advance solutions and renew hope.”
Qatar’s Commitment to Global Cooperation
Ahmad Hassen Al-Hamadi, Secretary General of the ministry of Foreign Affairs of qatar, welcomed the international community, emphasizing Qatar’s dedication to fostering dialogue and cooperation. “We are confident that this Summit will provide a pivotal possibility to reaffirm the political will and to capitalise on the abundant opportunities to accelerate and stimulate transformative actions to achieve social development and social justice for all,” he said.
A Gathering of Global Leaders
Over the next several days, more than 8,000 participants – including Heads of State and Government, ministers, civil society leaders, youth delegates, workers, and private sector representatives – will converge at the QNCC. Discussions will center on key issues such as social protection, inequality, decent work, and the inclusion of marginalized groups.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed last week that Secretary-General António Guterres will address the opening ceremony on Tuesday. Mr. Guterres is expected to assess progress made as the inaugural Social Summit in copenhagen in 1995, while also highlighting the urgent need to address widening inequalities, unemployment, poverty, conflicts, and widespread human suffering.
Visual Spectacle highlights Sustainable Development Goals
Adding a striking visual element to the ceremony, the Education Above all Foundation, in partnership with Qatar’s Internal Security Forces and Joint Special Forces, orchestrated a breathtaking display.A team of parachutists descended over the QNCC, each carrying a flag representing one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The performance symbolized the Foundation’s commitment to education equity and sustainability, and visually reinforced the Summit’s overarching goal: to accelerate progress on social development and ensure no one is left behind. delegates and onlookers applauded the display, recognizing it as a powerful depiction of unity, shared obligation, and collective action.
