According to the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the recommended daily amount of protein for the body is 0.9 g per kg of weight per day for boys aged 3 to 18 and girls aged 3 to 15. For girls between the ages of 15 and 18, the required protein intake decreases to 0.8 g per kg of weight per day.

However, as one ages, the body’s protein needs increase. The American College of Sports Medicine reports that at the age of 50, an individual needs to increase protein intake by one gram per kilogram of body weight to maintain muscle mass.

For those looking to build athletic muscle, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends consuming between 1.2 to 1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, or the equivalent of 0.5 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight. It is advised to obtain these protein levels through a balanced diet combined with regular exercise such as weightlifting, running, or cycling.

While protein and amino acid supplements are available, it is possible to meet these protein requirements solely through a well-rounded diet. Animal products such as meat, milk, dairy products, eggs, poultry, and fish are rich sources of proteins that contain a balanced level of amino acids. Additionally, plant-based foods like legumes and nuts are also essential sources of proteins.
