Morocco is fostering a new wave of sustainable businesses, with 22 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) completing a five-month accelerator program designed to drive green growth and create jobs. The program, known as the GGJAP, is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Morocco, with support from the Regional Office for the Arab States (RBAS), the Government of Denmark, and the UNDP Nordic Representative Office.
The culmination of the third cohort was marked by an Investor Day, bringing together high-potential companies with investors, public institutions, and UN agencies to explore impact investment opportunities. This event underscored a growing recognition that sustainable development is not merely an environmental imperative, but a powerful engine for economic progress.
Accelerating Morocco’s Sustainable Transition
The GGJAP initiative operates under the umbrella of the Danish-Arab Partnership Program (DAPP) and focuses on supporting Moroccan SMEs in transitioning to economic models that are both sustainable and resilient. These businesses are operating in crucial sectors, including circular economy, agritech, sustainable mobility, and resource and waste management.
“The GGJAP Investor Day marks not only the closing of an intensive cycle of five months of support, but above all the culmination of an ambitious journey,” stated a senior UNDP official. “Green growth is no longer an option, but an opportunity to create decent jobs, strengthen economic resilience and build a more just and sustainable development model.”
A New Generation of Entrepreneurs
The supported companies represent a dynamic shift in Moroccan entrepreneurship, prioritizing environmental and social impact alongside financial returns. They are actively building solutions to address pressing challenges, demonstrating that economic performance and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.
The Investor Day served as a platform for these companies to showcase their innovative solutions and engage with potential funders. The event was designed to foster dialogue, networking, and collaboration, facilitating access to crucial resources like financing, markets, and strategic partnerships.
According to a company release, the program’s success highlights the importance of a collaborative ecosystem in accelerating the growth of green SMEs. The initiative underscores Morocco’s commitment to ecological transition, innovation, and environmental commitment, aligning with the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The participating SMEs embody a generation of entrepreneurs proving that economic performance, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion can – and must – go hand in hand. This approach is not just shaping the future of Moroccan business, but offering a model for sustainable development across the region.
