Unexpectedly Sad: When Humor Falls Flat

Dick Van Dyke to Reach Centennial Milestone, Reflects on a Life Well-Lived

A remarkable career spanning decades culminates this December as Dick Van Dyke prepares to become the oldest living Hollywood actor.

At 99 years old, Dick Van Dyke continues to embody the timeless humor that captivated audiences in the 1960s and 70s through iconic roles in productions like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as well as The Dick Van Dyke Show. The celebrated actor will turn 100 on December 13th, surpassing fellow entertainment legend Mel Brooks (99) as the oldest performer in the industry.

Van Dyke joins an exclusive group of centenarians who have left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment, including the late Norman Lloyd (106), Olivia de Havilland (104), Kirk Douglas (103), and George Burns (100). As he approaches this significant milestone, the four-time Emmy Award winner has shared candid and humorous reflections on his long life.

“I won’t officially be 100 years old until December. Two months. Two months,” Van Dyke reportedly said, adding with a laugh, “It would be funny if it didn’t come.” He playfully acknowledged a touch of regret, stating, “Sometimes I brag about how I got to be 100 years old and the truth is that, if I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself. And it’s frustrating because I don’t know what I did right, apart from her,” gesturing to his wife, Arlene. “I didn’t do anything right,” he joked to People magazine.

A Continued Presence Despite Health Challenges

Despite recent health setbacks, Van Dyke remains committed to his craft and philanthropic endeavors. He and his wife, Arlene Silver, whom he married in 2012, attended a Vandy High Tea event in Malibu, California, to raise funds for The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the forthcoming Dick Van Dyke Museum.

Silver has been a steadfast advocate for her husband, explaining his occasional absences from scheduled appearances. “When you’re 90 years old, you have good days and bad days, and when you’re 40, you have good days and bad days. Today was not one of his good days and he couldn’t be here,” she explained during one such instance.

Recent Roles and Future Projects

Van Dyke’s enduring appeal has led to recent appearances in Mary Poppins Returns and Buttons (both 2018), as well as guest roles in Days of Our Lives and The Simpsons. He is currently attached to the upcoming film Capture the Flag, a project in pre-production that also features Barry Corbin and Paul Dooley. The cast originally included the late John Amos and Louis Gossett Jr., who both passed away in 2024.

Directed by Ryan Little, known for the Saints and Soldiers trilogy, Capture the Flag centers on a group of veterans who compete in a spirited game of capture the flag for the honor of raising the American flag each morning in their community.

Despite acknowledging he is “at the end of his life,” Van Dyke remains dedicated to sharing his talents with his fans. He continues to appear in public whenever possible, determined to deliver his best work and leave a lasting legacy.
