United Airlines is dismantling its flight segment metric for Premier elite status starting January 1, 2027, moving qualification entirely to Premier Qualifying Points while raising the threshold for its top Premier 1K tier to 32,000 points.
The Chicago-based airline announced the overhaul in emails to MileagePlus members and through its public website. Under the incoming rules, the carrier is getting rid of one path to achieve elite status. Previously, travelers could combine Qualifying Flights—known as PQFs—with Premier Qualifying Points to secure status tiers. When the new qualification year begins on January 1, 2027, those segment counts will no longer count toward status.
Jarad Fisher, United’s President of MileagePlus, described the flight segments metric as an old relic when discussing the transition with travel site The Points Guy. He added that the airline thought it made more sense for them to have one consistent metric focused across the board between flight activity and airline engagement. Following prior adjustments made by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines to the same practice, the carrier also reduced earnings for basic economy flights. United previously upped the thresholds required to earn Premier status in 2024 for the 2025 qualification year.

New 32,000 Point Threshold For Premier 1K
Premier Silver sits at 6,000 PQPs, Gold requires 12,000 PQPs, and Platinum demands 18,000 PQPs under the 2027 rules. Lower and mid-tier qualification requirements remain flat, but reaching the airline’s pinnacle reward level becomes more demanding. However, members aiming for the highest tier, Premier 1K, must now accumulate 32,000 qualifying points—a jump from the 28,000 points required in 2026.
Travelers earn Premier Qualifying Points at a rate of one PQP per dollar spent on base fares and carrier-imposed surcharges for United and United Express flights, as well as for every 100 miles redeemed for travel on United flights. Partner airlines within Star Alliance calculate PQPs based on flight distance subject to a per-flight cap, while eligible co-branded credit cards accrue points through everyday spending up to yearly caps.
Premier Tier Members Must Complete Four Mandatory Flights
Every Premier tier still requires members to complete at least four flights operated by United or United Express within the calendar year, even with the pure points model. Cardholders cannot bypass flying entirely. While elite status relies strictly on points, co-branded credit cards provide earning pathways and head starts. For instance, the United Club Card earns 1 PQP per $15 spent up to an annual limit of 32,000 PQPs, which on paper reaches the 1K threshold though the four-flight minimum remains mandatory.
Cardholders holding Premier status also receive a structural head start at the beginning of the year. United automatically deposits 5% of the points needed to reach the tier earned the previous year, provided the member holds an eligible co-branded card as primary cardholder with the account open on December 31, 2026, and retains Premier status on February 1, 2027. This starter bonus grants 300 points for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum, and 1,600 for 1K.
Qualifying In 2026
Flyers looking to use legacy rules still have time before the system transitions. The current 2026 qualification cycle, which runs through December 31, 2026, continues to permit the combination of flight segments and points. Status earned during 2026 remains active through January 31, 2028. Meanwhile, Basic Economy tickets continue to earn PQPs and satisfy the four-flight minimum, though general members without status or an eligible credit card earn no redeemable miles on Basic Economy tickets issued after April 2, 2026.
