The researchers from the University of Leeds, among others, examined various sectors, including the steel industry, chemicals, the food processing industry and the aluminum sector. According to them, the figure of 85 percent emission reduction can be achieved by actually applying promising techniques on a massive scale.

The researchers see an important role for hydrogen, electrification and the capture and storage of CO2, among other things. According to them, biomass can also help reduce emissions, although other researchers say this is not very desirable because it can lead to air pollution and deforestation.

Stumbling block

The results of the study have been published in the scientific journal Joule. The scientists recognize that technology cannot simply solve all problems. Costs are often the biggest stumbling block. For example, according to scientists, it usually costs two to three times as much to run industrial installations on electricity that can be sustainably generated than on fossil fuels such as natural gas or coal.

Infrastructure also plays an important role, they say. “If CO2 capture and storage is necessary, but the means to transport that CO2 are lacking, this will slow down the reduction of emissions,” the researchers explain. ‘There is still a lot of work to be done.’
