A sit-in protest was held in front of Jaffna University to protest the arrest of Velanswamy.
The protest was carried out peacefully by university students who gathered in front of Jaffna University entrance today.
The students said that they cannot accept the arrests that are taking place to prevent the democratic protests and they said that we will continue to raise our voice against this.
The struggle against Ranil
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe had traveled to Jaffna to participate in the National Pongal Festival on the 15th of Pongal.
At that time, students of Jaffna University, relations of the disappeared and the coordinator of the People’s Uprising Movement from Bothu to Polikandi were involved in the protest.
Condemnation of Velan Swamy’s arrest
It is against this background that Velan Swamy was arrested yesterday and was released on bail after being produced in the court.
A vigil was held by university students today against the illegal arrest of Velan Swamy. It is also reported that the police are still searching for many people who were involved in the protest against the president.
