Uttar Pradesh Invests Rs 49.7 Crore in New Sports Infrastructure for Government Schools

Uttar Pradesh is poised to significantly enhance sports opportunities for students with a new initiative to construct mini indoor stadiums across the state.

Uttar Pradesh is making a substantial investment in the physical and mental well-being of its students with the construction of 21 mini indoor stadiums in government inter colleges across 17 districts. The project, backed by a Rs 49.7 crore (approximately $5.96 million USD) investment, aims to provide year-round access to a variety of sports, fostering a healthier and more active lifestyle among the state’s youth.

Boosting Sports Access and Student Development

The decision to build these facilities stems from a commitment to holistic student development, recognizing the crucial link between physical activity and academic performance. “This initiative is designed to improve the physical fitness of students alongside their studies,” a senior official stated. The new stadiums will accommodate a range of popular sports, including badminton, judo, tennis, basketball, and table tennis, offering students diverse opportunities to engage in athletic pursuits.

The project’s scope initially encompassed 23 government inter colleges in 19 districts, but was refined to focus on 21 colleges in 17 districts after careful evaluation of proposed sites. According to a government order issued by KK Gupta, Special Secretary of Secondary Education, projects in Unnao and Ghazipur districts were excluded due to unsuitable land conditions – specifically, land failing to meet required standards in Unnao and low-lying terrain in Ghazipur.

Project Details and Timeline

Construction of each indoor mini stadium is estimated to cost around Rs 4.92 crore (approximately $590,000 USD). The facilities will be constructed by agencies nominated by the government, with a strict one-year completion deadline. KK Gupta has emphasized the importance of quality control, instructing the Director of Education to prioritize construction standards. A district task force will oversee the project, and the District School Inspector or Principal of each institution will be held accountable for ensuring specifications are met.

The schools selected to receive the new stadiums include:

  • PM Shri GGIC, Bijnor
  • GIC, Pilibhit
  • GIC, Agra
  • Schools in Ambedkar Nagar, Ayodhya, Pratapgarh, Badaun, Hardoi, Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Aligarh, Gonda, and Kanpur Nagar
  • DDU Model College, Ambedkar Nagar
  • Schools in Sambhal and Bulandshahr
  • Government Innovative School, Gonda

A Step Towards a More Active Future

This investment represents a significant step towards transforming the sports landscape within Uttar Pradesh’s government schools. The availability of indoor facilities will allow students to continue training and competing regardless of weather conditions, maximizing their potential and fostering a year-round sporting culture.

Beyond athletic skill development, the initiative is expected to instill valuable life lessons in students. “With the construction of an indoor stadium, students will be able to learn important things like discipline and teamwork,” a government spokesperson noted. This effort by the Uttar Pradesh government could prove to be a pivotal step towards the overall development of the state’s students, nurturing not only their physical abilities but also their character and future success.
