An aircraft bomb will be defused in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen on Sunday. Thousands of people then have to leave their homes by morning. A hospital is also being completely evacuated.

Construction workers had already discovered the 250 kilogram dud from the Second World War on November 19 on the grounds of the Jewish Hospital on Iranische Strasse. The forensic fireworkers secured the American bomb with water pillows.

To defuse the situation on site, the police set up a restricted area with a radius of 500 meters around the site. She called on all residents to leave their apartments and the restricted area by six a.m. at the latest. “Twelve to 15 thousand people will be affected,” said a police spokeswoman on Thursday.

There is also a nursing home in the restricted area. The Jewish hospital, which has only been accepting patients since Monday if the planned length of stay does not exceed 24 hours, will be evacuated on Saturday, according to a clinic spokeswoman. The DRK hospital, in which only some buildings have to be cleared, is also located on the edge of the restricted area.

The cordoned-off area is delimited by the following streets: to the north by Residenzstrasse and Reginhardstrasse, to the east by Osloer and Drontheimer Strasse, to the south by Reinickendorfer Strasse and to the west by Seestrasse and Groninger Strasse.
