The New Year arrived quietly for many in Upper Franconia,but was marred by a fatal traffic accident and a significant workload for local police,responding to over 338 incidents throughout the night. Despite a largely peaceful celebration across the region, emergency services faced a demanding evening, culminating in the loss of a young police officer.

Fatal Crash Claims Life of Police Officer

Shortly after 3:00 a.m. on january 1st, a patrol car from the Naila police station crashed on the B173 between Selbitz and the A9 junction. The vehicle collided with an SUV. The 25-year-old officer riding in the patrol car died at the scene. The 20-year-old driver was seriously injured. The SUV driver, 42, also sustained serious injuries.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel, even during festive periods.

New Year’s Eve Incident Breakdown

Beyond the tragic accident, police responded to a variety of incidents throughout the night. These included:

  • Property Damage: 28 cases, with total damages exceeding 100,000 euros.
  • Assault Offences: 26 reported cases, including one resulting in serious injury.
  • Traffic Accidents: 17 accidents occurred across the region, resulting in six injuries in total, including the fatality.

Baunach Barn fire Causes Significant Damage

Barn Fire: A fire in Baunach caused an estimated 100,000 euros in damage to a barn. Firefighters controlled the blaze; no injuries were reported.

Despite the individual incidents, authorities generally view the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Upper Franconia as peaceful. However, the loss of the police officer casts a somber shadow over the region, highlighting the inherent risks faced by those dedicated to public safety.
