US and EU announce ‘task force’ to reduce European dependence on Russian gas

The United States will strive to supply Europe with an additional 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year.

The United States and the European Union announced on Friday the creation of a working group aimed at reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, due to Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

The United States will strive to supply Europe with an additional 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year, under the initiative unveiled by US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to a statement. “We reaffirm our commitment to Europe’s energy security and to accelerating the global transition to clean energy“, President von der Leyen and President Biden repeated Thursday in a press release.

The EU still wants to achieve independence from Russian gas before the end of the decade, while the United States has announced that it wants to cooperate with it to help it achieve this goal. The issue of energy independence has become all the more crucial since Vladimir Putin’s announcement on Wednesday. The latter had announced his decision to no longer accept payments in dollars or euros for gas deliveries to the EU, thus strengthening the course of the ruble and weakening Western sanctions against Russia.
