MarÃa Elena López and her husband, Susano López, proactively obtained US passports for their two daughters two years ago, anticipating a possible return to Mexico. “Even though we do not have documents, we are not planning to return to Mexico, but in case the immigration agents stop us, we decided that our two girls born in the united States had to get their American passport,†MarÃa stated. She emphasized that American birth certificates alone are no longer sufficient reassurance, and a passport is now considered “essential.â€
This sentiment is reflected in a notable increase in applications for dual citizenship at the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles. Officials reported a 161% jump in birth registrations last year, with a total of 6,338 registrations processed compared to 2023. Expanding Access to Mexican Nationality Through Birth Registration
The Mexican consulate in Los Angeles has recently streamlined the process for obtaining Mexican birth certificates through a new “birth registration†system. “previously, the birth certificate through the registration process could only be done in the civil registry of Mexico; and this procedure applies when the Mexican father is not on the radar nor is there a marriage certificate for the parents,†a consulate spokesperson explained. The new system addresses challenges faced by families where the father’s location is unknown or a marriage certificate is unavailable.
The first beneficiaries of this new process where brothers Jonathan Alonso and Joseph Concepción Picos, who had long struggled to establish their Mexican nationality. “The lack of location of the father for recognition, as well as the non-existence of the marriage certificate of his parents, had represented an obstacle,†the consulate stated. Jonathan Picos expressed his relief, stating, “One of the things I had dreamed of since I was a child was to connect with my father’s side of my family and have a sense of culture. And today the dream has finally come true.†He also praised the efficiency of the new process, noting it was completed “in a couple of weeks.â€
The consulate attributes the simplification of procedures to initiatives by the ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Digital Change and Telecommunications Agency, aimed at improving user experiance.
