Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced a national security designation targeting educational centers that offer Mandarin classes, cultural activities, and China-related programs inside universities across various countries.
Hegseth Labels Confucius Programs National Security Threats
Hegseth stated that organizations linked to the teaching centers attempted to sway young scholars and target protected American research. He issued a direct warning against foreign interference in academic settings.
Let this be a lesson to any country that attempts to steal our hard-earned inventions or turn our youth against their own country. We have had enough of that. To these universities, I say, just like the Department of War: stay alert. Do not allow these influences to enter again. Pete
Congress Restricts Funds as Enrollment Drops
Congress restricted certain federal funds for academic institutions hosting the centers in 2018. Lawmakers acted on apprehension regarding academic freedom and the security of university research facilities.
Campus presence nationwide dropped steeply following this oversight.
Federal officials report that related networks adapted to tighter regulations despite the decline in official campus installations. Hegseth noted that various entities resurfaced under revised names and organizational structures. These groups maintain ties with roughly 30 American universities across 80 separate organizations.
The Department of War spent the last two months dismantling these newly structured groups. Officials targeted the sleeper organizations incorporated into the threat list.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the designation.
