The Federal Aviation Management (FAA) is implementing a 10% reduction in air traffic at 40 major U.S. airports, beginning today, as a direct response to the ongoing government shutdown and the resulting strain on air traffic controllers. The disruption is already having a ripple effect on the airline industry,with shares of major carriers like United and American falling approximately 1% in trading. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated the reductions will be limited to 40 “high traffic markets” and emphasized the agency’s need for airline cooperation in adjusting flight schedules.
Despite the operational challenges, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that flying in the United States remains safe. “No, I’m not worried,” Trump said. “It’s a legitimate question… They want to be sure that flying is 100% safe, that’s why they are doing it.”
