Air Traffic Control Shortages Ground Flights as Government Shutdown deepens
Nearly half of the 30 busiest US airports experienced staffing shortages of air traffic controllers on Friday,triggering widespread flight delays as the federal government shutdown entered its 31st day.The situation represents the most meaningful disruption to air travel as the shutdown began, with New York notably hard hit, where 80% of controllers were absent.
The ongoing impasse in Congress is directly impacting the nation’s air travel system. According to the Federal Aviation administration (FAA), at least 35 facilities, including those serving major metropolitan areas, reported personnel issues. Airports affected include those in New York city, Austin, Newark, Phoenix, Washington, Nashville, Dallas, and Denver, with some locations reporting average delays exceeding one hour.
The shutdown has forced approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers to work without pay. “after 31 days without pay,air traffic controllers are under immense stress and fatigue,” a senior FAA official stated. “The shutdown must end so that these controllers receive the pay they’ve earned and travelers can avoid further disruptions and delays.”
While the impact could have been even more severe, airline officials noted that Halloween evening traffic was 20% lower than usual, partially mitigating the effects of the staffing crisis. Despite this, FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, reported more than 5,600 flights delayed and 500 canceled on Friday.
New York City’s LaGuardia Airport bore a significant brunt of the disruptions, with 50% of flights delayed and 12% canceled, averaging a 140-minute delay. Washington DC’s Reagan National airport experienced delays for approximately 25% of its scheduled flights.
The US Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, warned of escalating disruptions. “Coming into this weekend and then the week after,I think you are going to see even more disruptions in the airspace,” he said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom.
The problems weren’t isolated to Friday. On Thursday, air traffic control shortages caused significant delays at Orlando, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Washington DC, with FlightAware data showing 7,300 flights delayed and 1,250 canceled nationwide.
Major airlines – including Delta air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and American airlines – have jointly urged Congress to pass a short-term funding bill, known as a “continuing resolution,” to reopen the government. The president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Nick Daniels, echoed this call on Friday.
The government shutdown, which began on October 1, stems from a stalled federal funding bill in Congress. Republican lawmakers are advocating for a “clean” funding measure without additional stipulations, while Democrats are demanding discussions on extending healthcare subsidies set to expire at the end of the year.
