Tel Aviv: General Michael Kurila, the head of the Central Command, the US military arm in the West Asia region, has arrived in Israel. The visit comes amid signs of imminent retaliation for Israel’s attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus and the killing of a senior leader.
Kurila will meet with dignitaries including Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Army Chief Hirsi Halevi. American media Bloomberg reported that Iran may attack Israeli military and government centers in the region, quoting US officials.
It is also reported that the US West Asia Representative Brett McGurk called the foreign ministers of Iran’s neighboring countries, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Iraq. The phone call was to ask Iran to exercise restraint. German airline Lufthansa has canceled all flights to Tehran due to the possibility of a counter-attack.
On April 1, Israel launched an attack on Damascus, causing further concern in the region. 13 people including Quds Force Senior Commander Brigadier General Muhammad Riza Zahedi were killed in the incident. Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, but senior military figures have acknowledged it.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has announced that he will do whatever is necessary for Israel’s security if Iran retaliates for its attack on the embassy in Damascus. Biden’s announcement comes as the U.S. is gearing up for heavy warming in the region.
